Consisting 3 prints with the words Salaam, Amal and ‘Ilm written in Arabic script, using specially designed fonts by Malaysian designer Sherwan Rozan. Risograph prints have a lo-fi, analogue quality with its uneven ink coverage and mis-registrations but these are what gives them a unique aesthetic.
Risograph printing is a technique best described as a ‘digital screen printing’. It’s known for its vivid colours (that other printers can’t produce) and its specific textures of lo-fi charm and analogue look. The printing method often produces flaws, such as mis-registration and sometimes uneven ink coverage – but it is these flaws that give riso prints such a unique aesthetic and makes every riso print slightly different to the next.
‘Ilm
Although there are several words to convey knowledge or learning in Arabic, the word ‘Ilm is one of the most encompassing.
‘Ilm invokes the knowledge of both spiritual and worldly things, as well as the concepts of teaching, education, science and theory.
Salaam
Meaning “peace” in Arabic and also evokes security and safety. Salaam alaikum is the traditional Arabic greeting meaning “Peace be upon you”.
It is enough to simply say the word Salaam to visitors or friend in order to convey feelings of welcome and brotherhood.
Amal
Meaning “hope” in Arabic and also Hebrew. The word also evokes desire and aspiration. Amal also means hard work and good deed.
